Santa On The Street

Quick blog post of some pictures from SantaCon which happened in cities all over the world including London on the 10th December 2011. I didn’t even know the event was taking place and was just in London to stroll around the West End, do a little bit of street photography and to see the rather horrible corporate Christmas lights down Regents Street. So walking up from Westminster tube station to Trafalgar Square it was a pretty amusing sight to see so many people dressed as Santa, drinking a lot of alcohol and throwing Brussels sprouts at each other.

Protest Picture Published In The Guardian

My new year resolution is to update my website more often, it has been a little hard recently photographing several events in London over the past couple of month. Even my much adored street photography has had to take a back seat! However 2012 has started with a bang after the Guardian published one of my TUC March For The Alternative pictures in their newspaper over the Christmas period.

Fingers crossed I can get some more images published in national newspapers this year, more commissions from people, groups, promotions etc holding events in London and Southend and looking for a photographer. So there we have it a early post for 2012 and not the last. Don’t forget if you wish to hire me as a photographer for an event or commission you can email using the contact form.

The Bank Of Ideas

Yesterday I visited The Bank Of Ideas, a former UBS building that is currently being occupied as part of what is being reported in the mainstream press as the Occupy London campaign. I did go with the intention of doing portrait pictures of the protesters and squatters inside the building. Unfortunately most were adverse to having their picture taken and lost interest in me because I wasn’t an “official” agency or press photographer.

So after listening to a couple of discussion groups that had formed on the first floor and talking to protesters taking part I decided to wander off and explore the occupied UBS building on my own. As a photographer who normally photographs events and specifically people at those events, taking interior pictures of this old office block isn’t something that got me all that excited. I’m just putting the pictures from inside The Bank Of Ideas on my photography site to show the wider world what’s inside.

Photography Advice / Tips

I’ve decided to add another new section to my website which is (surprise, surprise) photography advice and tips. As a photographer it is great to have an online presence with a portfolio to help attract potential new clients. However it is always good to give something back to the (photographic) community (and this is me hopefully doing just that). Striking a balance is the hard part as obviously I don’t want to confuse and put off any potential new commercial photography clients.

Bill Nighy

On Saturday I didn’t have any freelance photography jobs to keep me out of trouble so I escaped from Essex and headed up to East London to do some street photography around Whitechapel and Brick Lane. After a morning on the street I then moved on towards the West End to indulge in being a bit of a tourist and to eat an overpriced burger. Whilst walking around Seven Dials in Covent Garden I saw a lot of people standing around outside the Donmar Warehouse Theatre. Being a curious (it killed the cat you know) photographer I moved in to see what was going on and caught sight of the very cool British TV and film actor Bill Nighy chatting to fans and signing autographs.

Competition – Eyewitness Photography

The Royal Academy Of Arts in London has just opened submissions for the 2011 Eyewitness Photography competition. Photographers can enter in the four categories: street life, fashion, portraits or abstract subjects. Obviously I’ll be entering some of my Street Photography into the street life part of the competition.

Thursday Pride

Had a nice little surprise yesterday when some of my pictures from this year’s Gay Pride event in London were reviewed on the photography section of the Guardian website. Seeing your photography on a national newspapers website and having some kind comments from the guys and girls on the picture desk is fantastic and a huge confidence boost.
